T O P I C R E V I E WRobert PearlmanI recently came across In3DSpace, which offers 3D printed kits and pre-assembled models through Etsy. Their catalog includes replicas of the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars rover wheels, SpaceX Falcon 9 grid fins and a few engines, including the RS-68, F-1 and the RS-25.It was the latter that drew my interest. As just $25 for the kit and $50 assembled, I knew immediately I was going to order the assembled RS-25. The example photographs showed the engine printed in an off-white, as well as dark grey.I had an idea, though, and sent a message asking if different parts could be printed in different colors to more closely match the appearance of the RS-25. Seth, who runs In3DSpace, was happy to give it a try and the results, shown below, came out great! The 1:24 scale: (4 by 4 by 7 inches or 100 by 100 by 180 mm) model makes for a great display on its own, but also complements the few space shuttle main engine artifacts in my collection.GACspaceguyVery nice display. How was the surface finish in your opinion. So many 3D prints come out rough looking,in these photos it looks fairly smooth.apolloprojecktLooks nice. It depends also what material you can use; under wire version is ABS better than PLA and and how accurate you let it print. Example high detail printing will cost around 50 hours for this model and normal printing 20 hours but not so sharp more. for more money if you have a bigger 4K resin printer it's almost real flat and sharp and little micro details come better out, but resin cost more.Robert PearlmanThe finish is not as smooth as say a commercial plastic kit or die-cast model, but, at least for this particular print (the RS-25), it is not a distraction. In fact, the finish lends itself to some of the components, especially the nozzle.In3DSpace uses PLA plastic filament for their models. And for the price, I am very happy with the results.garymilgromThat engine and the artifacts make a great display!
